Meet computer engineering graduate student Traelyn Brasseaux

Written byQuinn Foster

鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to beat the program here at UL Lafayette. We have a historically great program in Computer Science and Engineering, and it is possible to complete a Master of Science degree in 3 semesters. The program is very cost-effective in that sense."

Where I'm From

I am from Eunice, Louisiana.

Where I Am

I am a graduate assistant for the University Computing Support Services.

Where I'm Going

After earning my degree, I plan to enter the hardware design industry, focusing on Verilog and VLSI design.

Traelyn Brasseaux inspired motivation within himself to progress in his academic education.

鈥淚n the Spring of 2024, I graduated with my bachelor's degree in computer science, with a concentration in computer engineering and a minor in mathematics, here at the 天美视频 at Lafayette. However, I wanted to specialize more in the hardware aspect of my field, and this degree path was perfect for me.鈥 He said, 鈥淢y graduate studies have enhanced previous knowledge of my field, with circuit design and hardware description languages at the forefront of my studies.鈥

As a computer engineering graduate student, Traelyn鈥檚 research studies include a project around injury prevention in exercise movements using live-video feeds.

鈥淭his project has allowed me to engage in a multi-disciplinary project in collaboration with other departments, such as the . The faculty here have been so open to assisting in any way they can, providing insight on project parameters outside of my scope. I am very thankful for the way the faculty have helped in my studies.鈥

During undergraduate studies, Traelyn was a Presidential Student Ambassador. He strongly believes that being a student ambassador provided professional development and networking opportunities that he would not have access to.

His favorite experience at the University was obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science

鈥淭he road was long, and the feeling of overcoming obstacles on the way was worth it in the end. I was very involved as an undergraduate student, and I received so much support from my UL Lafayette family that I connected with them through that involvement,鈥 he said.

Traelyn applauds Dr. Martin Margala for his support in the search for internships. 鈥淗e has provided advice and even let me borrow textbooks related to an internship鈥檚 scope to study for a technical interview. He also has passed along information on available internships in the area, leading to further success in my field,鈥 he said.

Following the completion of his master鈥檚 degree, Traelyn plans to enter the hardware design industry, focusing on Verilog (a hardware description language used to model electronic systems) and VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design.

When asked what advice to share with aspiring graduate students, he shared:

鈥淚t is hard to beat the program here at UL Lafayette. We have a historically great program in Computer Science and Engineering, and it is possible to complete a Master of Science degree in 3 semesters. The program is very cost-effective in that sense."

"UL Lafayette also has such a vibrant student culture, where it feels like everyone has a place within our family. I could not recommend UL Lafayette enough,鈥 he said.
